Just wonderin.. Is this going to be something we're doing every week? Cos I'm thinking it will turn something that was more casual into something where Play is going to try to perfect everyone he meets :P

We're going to scare away anyone who doesn't at least have a decent understanding of SF4.

I'd say once a month would be best. Possibly EVAC could look into longer sessions or more room if things get crowded.

Hmm... I don't think monthly is enough. Perhaps once a month you could have it be that every game counts towards tournament placings, but every other week there could be a specific time where it's serious SF4 ranking time (say 6-7, or whenever), with the rest of the evening devoted to more casual SF4 play.

Hmm, that could work, actually...
Or we could just define every game as 'social' or 'ranking', as long as there are 10 games or so at a time (ELO systems have been shown to break down without a reasonable sized group).

I think a preset ranking time would make it easiest for record keeping, and also make sure that people don't chicken out when playing against the better players (ie only want to play casual).

the idea of 1hr of ranking matches is a great idea.

the only issue i see with that is we would have to set up 2 or 3 screens at a time.
if we had 10 pple , each would have to play 9 games..
we'd have to fit 90 games in the space of an hour..

what are the chances we could get a couple more 22 / 24 inch monitors
at evac each week?
im sure we can source some ps3 / xbox 360's , but its getting the monitors to evac thats the prob.

if we could rank for 3 weeks, then the 4th week we could do a double elim tourny via TIO
with the top 8 seeded..

You don't have to all play everyone with this kind of system, though. In time, the rankings will even themselves out, providing everyone plays a few games every now and then. It's best if you do, but it's not a necessity. Also, the number of games for that sort of process is a lot less than ninety (you're counting evey game twice), but still too many to do in an hour...

45 matches to get all of 10 players to play each other, to be precise... (n-1 + n-2 + n-3 + ... n-n)

With three screens that would actually be fairly doable in an hour. 15 matches per screen so you've got four minutes per match. A tight timetable but quite possible if you're doing best of three. Four screens and it's trivial, five and it's almost leisurely (9 minutes a match).

But of course, like Tom said, there's not actually a need to get everyone to play everyone else. The ranking system encourages players to beat the higher-ranked players, so if someone's winning all the time then they're bound to get challenged by other successful players.

good points and well picked up..

i thought i was being very math genius not saying 10 pple and 10 games each hahah

well.. the only issue with some games some times is that we have a few distinct levels of players at evac..
some of the more sneaky pple.. ie that guy who uses honda..
he could just come every week and play everyone lower than him..

then he could go undefeated for 3 weeks before someone forced him to play that heaps good sakura/blanka player..

is there any chance we could stay in the room past 8?

The beauty of this kind of system is that it stops this kind of thing from happening to a certain extent, as you get many less points for beating a Jubei or a Spiro than you do beating an Ali or a Playman. You could do that for a few weeks, but it wouldn't really help your ranking all that much.

Plus, it's unsporting not to accept a challenge, right?

We're allowed to be in the room until 9 (and precisely 9 - one minute over and we're charged for an hour's use at a punitive rate). So yeah, if you guys want to hang around a bit afterwards then you'll be welcome to do so, just be aware that (1) all the club's equipment will be leaving and (2) we really, really can't afford for you to go overtime.

Those security guards are getting pretty uppity, almost as if they had homes to go to or something.

A further note on the possibility of player repetively fighter weaker opponents to get ahead. This kind of thing would take a huge number of games to do.

As an example, if Ali (with his current rating of 1084) were to beat Jubei (with 892) (a 192 point difference) he would gain only 6 points for his effort, if the gap between them was only twice as large (384 points) Ali would gain just 2. By the time the gap becomes over 600, Ali would score no points as all for beating Jubei, and would lose 24 points every time he lost.

As you can see, the only way to inflate your rankings in any meaningful way is to fight those at your own or higher rankings.

I hope this has cleared up a little bit of confusion, not added any more.

"some of the more sneaky pple.. ie that guy who uses honda.."

Sneaky? It's playing smarter, not harder :D

I have to say I'm a fan of this system, if someone is willing to put in the effort to keep it going (and I'll bet it'll get tiresome after a few weeks). Basically I won't be able to make it to EVAC regularly, so being rewarded for beating higher ranked people will make catching up a bit easier.

"The first measures player performance per round rather than by match"

I'm confused, the first ranking says match rankings and the second one says round.. Is that just a mixup on the headings or is that right?

This is now fixed, and is not at all ambiguous any more...I hope.

I'm willing to keep the rating up to date providing that they're kept when I'm not there as well.

If anyone wants to go by any other name than the one currently in the list please let me know and I'll change it directly.

As the ELO system goes (well, depending on your handicaps + constants), it takes around 12 games of 1v1 to find out the accurate rank of a player. (In a 4player FFA, it only takes 5 and in a 4v4 team game it takes like 91)

One suggestion is just to randomise who you play each meeting. Say each person plays 3-5 different people per gathering.

Next thing you'll want to do is create a player matching system so roughly equal skill players face off against one another. Generally stops people from facing higher ranked players which they have less chance in defeating and thus ruining their ranking accuracy. Probably not so important in a smaller environment but it does mean the big fish are going to feed off the little fish for gradual ranking.

Perhaps a little, but remember that there's only about 15 competitors at the moment. Our player pool is much, much too small for that kind of thing.

Where'd you get your numbers from? I think that 12 games figure would only be applicable if the other players were already ranked, it will of course take longer in this case because nobody is ranked yet.

Probably a little different, the system I was looking into implementing into my gamers league was the TrueSkill system used by Microsoft Xbox Live. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/pro ... fault.aspx

The numbers an average number of games before a player's ranking settles into an accurate range. Of course, it can be larger than this depending on certain variations.

Yeah, I think trueskill uses a higher initial K value than I'm using here, but they can get away with it because they already have a large userbase to compare to.

Tell us more about this Gamer's League, eh?

Essentially a national ranking system consisting of 4 regular and 1 regional tournament per state per year with a 'Grand Final'. Also a public ranking system that doesn't rely on having to attend tournaments, just an online match reporting system with a smaller prize pool.

Tournaments are based on a 'play so many games', most wins go to winners bracket. Highest ranked players invited to regional (or get advanced/autoplaced in regional finals), winners of regionals go to nationals.

Hey guys, I won't be at EVAC this week, I'll be driving to Victoria for a wedding, so here's hoping all goes well. If you do have ranking battles, please record them however you like (try to include round by round scores and characters if you can!) and either leave it in the club gear for me to pick up some time or take it home and drop the results to be by the forum or PM.
Have fun, Ted.

For those who didn't catch where they came, tonight's tournament results were as follows:

1 - Playman
2 - PeteN
3 - theundyingmage
4 - Myles
5 - Hybrid, Troy
7 - Spiro, Jubei
9 - Hugo, Oss, Jimmy, Marble
13 - Josh, Dion, Brad, Terragent

A few unexpected placings there, and lots of new faces, which should make things interesting.

Rankings will be updated later this weekend, including other match scores that were recorded after the tournaments.
Stay posted, Ted.

Is there a way that this week's data can be tied in with the ran bats for an updated leaderboard?

Leaderboards updated!
Ali is going to have to turn up if he wants to stay near the top of the rankings. It was good to see so many new players there on Friday, even if it does play merry hell with the system.
See you next time, Ted.

cheers for all ur efforts, not only in helping with the double elim.
but it seems u recorded stats for the games afterwards..
i'll be posting some of the vids soon..

i did notice spiro's blanka almost beat Pete's honda.. that would have been awesome.
i know jubei's vega has stepped up.. again taking first round to Pete's honda...

im gonna take a break for a while, going to melb to watch tiger..
then basically waiting for Super SF4...

maybe i'll see some of you at Jubei's place on the 30th..
or at my place earlier if i can be bothered...

I did record the stats for the games afterwards, or some of them, but I didn't include them in the rankings. I decided that the torunament took the place of the weekly 'ranking time' this last week...
I'd offer up my place as a possible location closer to town, but the lack of air-con is not a big draw card, especially just at the moment...
Character rankings are up...poor Zangief.

If at some point there's going to be a prize for this, I've got a suggestion.

Street Fighter 4 snuggie.

Hey guys,
How do you all feel about doing monthly double-elim tournaments in the lead-up to AVCon? Not only will it give us some practice running tournaments and let us test our software, it'll be good practice for players and mean there's something planned at EVAC.
We're thinking we'll stagger SFIV (SSFIV once it comes out) tourneys with other ones for variety, but an SFIV one every month seems about right.
Comments?

Sounds like a great idea, in terms of testing tournament setups prior AVCon.

Huge congratulations to Vanta and his terrifying Guile who won the SFIV tournament undefeated over Undyingmage's Ryu, PeteN's E.Honda and Playman's Zangief in what was undoubtedly our highest quality EVAC SFIV tournament yet on Friday. Results are up and a copy of the bracket will be up sometime.

I have a feeling people will be brushing up on their technique in preparation for the next tournament, which will occur on the 23rd of April, and will include an extra late-comers bracket to accommodate those who can't make a 5.30 start. We'll also be looking at expanding the tournament size, as we went way over the 16 players expected on Friday.

April 23rd will make it officially the last SF4 tournament ever before we move onto SSF4. Too bad I can't make it though!

Ok, results are updated, including fancy new online access to the complete bracket. Just follow the links provided in the first post.

Awesome work! Meanwhile, is that really how you spell Jorge/George's name? I thought Play spelt it as Jorge to be different. Not sure though.

EDIT - I notice Sam is still only 1 rank below me, even though he's only shown up to one tourney.. Haha, will time adjust these rankings or will he sit in that approximate ranking forever?

Once we have a bit more data (about two more tournaments) we'll weed out those who've only come once just to simplify the list. I'm still kinda hoping a lot of the guys on the list once will come back sometime...

I'll also be instituting a scaling policy when playing against people who're in their first tournament, which will reduce the penalty currently handed out to those with the misfortune to play against a new person who's relaly good, and neutralise the benefits of playing against noobs. This policy will come into effect from the next tournament.

He's been written as Jorge before...but I dunno if it's right. If it isn't he can let me know and I'll change it. I'd like to see people use nicks rather than just their first name as much as possible just so that we don't get mixed up as easily, so I might just call him Hybrid, anyway.

Hey guys,
The 23 of April will hopefully be the last SFIV tournament at EVAC before we upgrade to SSFIV, and we'd like to send the old girl off with a bang. To do this, we're hoping to run a 32-person tournament at EVAC, but to make this happen we actually need the numbers. If you can come or know of others who can, please post here to give us an idea of numbers, and let everyone know that it's on so that they can let us know too (there's still people in Adelaide that don't know about us yet, amazingly enough). We'll be hoping to run one group of 16 players at the usual time of 5.30 and the second group at 6.30, to let those who're working or live further away a chance to compete. If we can't get teh numbers we'll have to run the normal 16 players tourney and some people are going to miss out :( , so let us know ASAP.
<Cue forums going down as the entire Street Fighter world posts here and crashes them>.

Just wondering when SSF4 hits will these leaderboards be reset or continued since its a new game with more characters balancing etc.

Probably the best thing to do is to keep the player rankings but reset the character rankings. But then I dunno, we'll see.
